Flinders University Museum of Art (FUMA) presents Crosscurrents, a new exhibition exploring coastal narratives and ecologies of the Ngarrindjeri, Kaurna, and Narungga waters of SA.

Six South Australian artists have created new works for the exhibition: Brad Darkson, Chris De Rosa, Honor Freeman, Michael Kutschbach, Sonya Rankine, and Mary-Jean Richardson. The works encompass speculative sculpture, reimagined cultural practice, and collaborations with marine ecologies.

Crosscurrents curator Belinda Howden says, “the intersecting narratives of Crosscurrents reveal the myths, histories, images, and objects unique to this stretch of South Australian shoreline, while evoking universal experiences of the coast”.

The exhibition reflects on the impact of bioprospecting (the extraction of biological resources for commercial purposes), as well as the effects of warming waters, toxic foam, and algae blooms on our coastlines and sea life. It also celebrates coastal life, from swimming and walking to observing the ever-shifting meeting points of land, sea, and sky.

FUMA Director Fiona Salmon says Crosscurrents “is a compelling and timely exploration of our connection to the coast, in the face of rapid ecological and cultural change”.

Crosscurrents runs until September 5 at FUMA. The exhibition is assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, and the SA Government through the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
