Berlin-based Signum Saxophone Quartet are joining forces with Australian cabaret performer Ali McGregor for a national tour of Hollywood Songbook.

Artistic director of Musica Viva Australia, Paul Kildea says the collaboration “is a nod to the transformational impact of immigrants on the culture of their adopted homes.”

The program explores the early-to-mid 20th century through music by European and American composers including Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Aaron Copland and Cole Porter.

“Hanns Eisler wrote his Hollywood Songbook holed up in Los Angeles in the early 1940s; a lucky émigré escaping the dark clouds over Europe. In our 80th year, Eisler’s title is a peg for a celebration of Musica Viva Australia’s founders and their impact on Australian culture,” Paul says.

The Adelaide performance is on Saturday, May 10 at the Adelaide Town Hall.

Signum Saxophone Quartet have previously played at Carnegie Hall in New York. Ali has performed everywhere from Glastonbury to Carnegie Hall, and made her solo debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra last year.
