The Forager: Burgers, pizza, wintry events

Jun 04, 2014, updated May 13, 2025

Today in The Forager, we get stuck into some comfort food news (think stout, chocolate, pizza, red wine and more), preview the weekend’s Sea & Vines (with more tickets to give away), a couple of city places close, and more.

Sea & Vines details and giveaway

McLaren Vale’s Sea & Vines festival dominates the long weekend, with tickets available for a range of food and wine events.

Some of the big events have sold out, but there are still tickets left to many events, including the Penny’s Hill seafood feasts (previewed in The Forager last week).

Advance ticket sales will finish this Friday, but there will be a box office at the McLaren Vale visitor centre on Sunday for those who haven’t booked. Designated drivers who register at the visitor centre can collect a range of vouchers and goodies.

To book your tickets and check out the program, go here.

The best news is that The Forager has three double passes to give away to the “Splash Merge” wine-blending experience at the Cradle of Hills winery, perched on Sellicks Hill.

Cradle of Hills winemaker Paul Smith will guide the hands-on masterclass featuring Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre varieties. As they say: “Sniff, sip and splash until the magic happens – the perfect blend.”

The event is on Sunday, June 8.

To be in the running, just send us as email with the subject header – The Forager Cradle of Hills – and include your full name and phone number.

Congratulations to reader George for picking up last week’s tickets to the Penny’s Hill seafood degustation.

Burgers and pizza

I’ve sometimes wondered if Adelaide has become “over-burgered” – but there is more to come.

Interstate franchise Grill’d is set to open its first South Australian outlet, on The Parade at Norwood.

Grill’d’s angle is that its burgers are healthy – utilising grass-fed beef and lamb (and with a nice selection of vegie burgers).

They promise flame-grilled-to-order, old-fashioned burgers. Also on the menu is a selection of salads, steak sandwiches and sliders.

They’ll be open on the corner of The Parade and George Street in a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, the enterprising people up at Campbelltown are launching a pizza festival from June 28 to July 27.

The area has been creative in pushing its Italian culinary credentials (see the Flavours of Campbelltown Food Trail) and the festival builds on this.

There are 10 pizzerias included in the festival, and the organisers promise that there’s a great depth of variety in the ways this global favourite is produced.

Go here for the full program, which includes pizza specials, celebrity speakers, music and more.

New menu at Longview

Sometimes long-running food destinations don’t get the attention they deserve.

The Sunday tapas tradition at Longview Vineyard, in a great spot out the back of Macclesfield, is one of those.

There’s not much better on a wintry Sunday afternoon than settling down in the rustic dining room at Longview, choosing your wine, and relaxing with the great views as the food just rolls out.

They’ve just launched their winter menu which includes tortilla, smoked chicken, slow-cooked pork and oregano pies, and lots more (you never go hungry).

Stay informed, daily

There are four courses including cheese for $46.50 per person. The full range of Longview wines is available to purchase.

White coffee stout

This idea caught our eye: the McLaren Vale Beer Company (MVBeer) has released a very limited edition “white coffee stout”.

The VALE/EXP/006 was created for the Great Australian Beer Spectacular but a limited number of kegs have escaped into some venues around Adelaide.

I haven’t got a hold of it yet, but MVBeer reckons drinkers are enjoying the sweet malts, coffee notes and creamy mouth feel of the brew (hints of mocha milkshake, apparently).

Despite that wrap, it’s apparently a sessionable beer, not just a novelty.

MVBeer head brewer Jeff Wright is a coffee nut who was inspired to create the beer while drinking an espresso martini.

He used wheat and ale malts in the mash and added some freshly roasted Ethiopian Nikesse coffee beans from Adelaide roaster Bar 9.

Keep an eye out for the VALE/EXP bright yellow decal around town. You might get lucky.

Single-origin chocolate

While we’re talking earthy winter flavours, Haigh’s chocolates has released a new range of single-origin chocolate bars.

Stock is limited, but I can personally recommend the 61 per cent Papua New Guinea bar – it’s earthy, smoky and awesome.

Closing time

A couple of recently opened Adelaide destinations are disappearing, sadly.

Il Mondo in James Place was a bold attempt at introducing the Italian aperitivo tradition to Adelaide.

The Forager was a supporter from the early days – a proper Italian bar in the heart of the city seemed a good idea. We’re sad to see it go.

Slightly less sadly, the boys from Red Trousers bar on Grenfell Street – which opened before Fringe and was always planned to be a short-lived affair – are closing up shop on June 21.

They’re promising to return in some form. Keep an eye on their Facebook page.
