SA’s Top 100 companies: 50 to 26
InDaily’s next release of the Business Index Top 100 reads like a shopping list of typical Australian products. Beer, mining, wool, air-conditioning, gold, steak and the automobile sector mix with SA’s growing travel and tourism industry
It’s been quite a few years since the sheep’s back was held up as the example of success, but one South Australian business is putting our golden fleece back in the spotlight.
Michell Holdings (49) is a 100 per cent family owned company with 147 years of experience in marketing Australian wool.
Michell is made up of brokers, buyers, processors and exporters of Australian wool with world-class manufacturing facilities at Salisbury, South Australia, and Suzhou, China, which together produce 15 million kilograms of products per year.
Clearlight Investments (31), trading as San Remo and Fantastic Snacks, is an Australian-owned private company that employs about 550 South Australians and manufactures food products locally and distributes to 35 other countries. It’s most famous for its pasta products.

Two beverage companies in the next 25 are responsible for some of Australia’s most well-known refreshments.
Australian Vintage Limited (29) produces brands including McGuigan Wines, Miranda Wines, Nepenthe Wines, Passion Pop Flavoured Sparkling, Sunnyvale Cask Wines, Tempus Two and Yaldara Wines.
Coopers Brewery Limited comes in at 28. Beer sales for Coopers have continued to grow in a declining market, with the brand now representing 5 per cent of all beer consumed in Australia. The recent addition of a second bottling line ensures a capacity of 1100 bottles per minute.

The remaining South Australian businesses from 25 to 1 of the top 100 will be published by InDaily leading up to the South Australian Business Index lunch on Wednesday, 28 October, with SA Premier Jay Weatherill as one of the guest speakers.
A panel discussion will be moderated by InDaily’s Tom Richardson and feature Crows’ chairman Rob Chapman (also the keynote speaker), Uber Australia’s general manager David Rohrsheim, Prescott general manager Andrew Sterzl, prominent local businesswoman Angelique Boileau from Boileau Business Solutions and Professor Jana Matthews, the director of UniSA’s Centre for Business Growth.
Entries for the InDaily South Australian Business Index Top 100 were eligible based on the following criteria:
- They must be a public South Australian company with an Adelaide share registry; or,
- A South Australian-operated company, founded and majority (50.01 per cent plus) owned by South Australians;
- Not owned in part or whole by any government body or government agency;
- Not registered with the ATO as a not-for-profit organisation; or,
- Registered with the ATO as a not-for-profit but gain more than 90 per cent of revenue through commercial activities.
