Worries about the recent terrorist attack in Paris and concerns about personal finances have put a dent in consumer confidence.
The latest ANZ-Roy Morgan weekly consumer confidence index is down 1.2 per cent for the week to November 22, extending the 0.6 per cent dip of the previous week.
ANZ economists said the fall could have been driven by the deadly Paris terrorist attacks and because people now felt less confident about their future finances.
“It is possible that the recent terrorist events are weighing on confidence,” ANZ’s co-head of economics Cherelle Murphy said.
“A recent Newspoll showed that around three-quarters of Australians believe a terrorist attack is at least likely in Australia.”
But, Murphy said, confidence levels remained above the long-run average.
