Food and drink happenings in South Australia, including our Barossa Gourmet Weekend picks, a Sidewood Wine dinner at Spaghetti Western, dining out for Father’s Day, a Suburban Brew showcase and the opening of SOHO Coffee.
This year’s Barossa Gourmet Weekend will serve up 44 events showcasing regional fare, including “intimate tastings, exquisite dining experiences, masterclasses, lingering brunches, garden parties, picnics, platters or flame grilled feasts”. Henschke and Hutton Vale Farm have teamed up to present a “Spring Fling” on Saturday, with food, live music (courtesy of the Porch Sessions), craft beers and of course a selection of featured wines. Other events include a Spirit of Barossa spirits and food pairing dinner hosted by Barossa Distilling Company and 1920s-inspired Rip Roaring Revelry, with live jazz, cocktails and “Prohibition-era finger food” at Barossa Chateau. While this is an event open to any and all, Seppeltsfield has decided to show some love to the locals who work to put on Barossa Gourmet Weekend by dedicating a breakfast event specifically to them. They’ve promised eggs to order with all the best sides, matched with a morning glass of Seppeltsfield Sparkling Shiraz. The event runs from 7.30am until 12pm and you can purchase tickets here.
The Crown and Anchor’s new upstairs restaurant, Midnight Spaghetti, will be in full swing from 6pm today, slinging pasta and good times to all who care to stop by for its opening night celebration. Just follow the sign marked “upstairs for angel hairs”. For more information, see the event page.
Sturt Street Cellars is inviting gypsy brewers The Suburban Brew in for a showcase event. The brewery’s Black IPA and English Special Bitter will be on show, on tap and in bottle. The event kicks off at 5pm. See the event page for further information.
King William Street restaurant Spaghetti Western will host Adelaide Hills winery Sidewood for a five-course wine dinner featuring “pan-seared scallops, char-grilled prawns and calamari, porcini risotto, and much more”, all accompanied by a Sidewood drop. Tickets are $89 per person, and you can book through the Spaghetti Western website.
Adelaide CBD coffee roaster SOHO is offering the public a free introductory coffee for its official launch this Sunday. Located at 233 Morphett Street, the roasters will be open from 7am until 2pm and are welcoming everyone to come in and see how they operate. For more information, see the event page.
Spend a long lunch at Iberia with Dad.
If you’re looking to spoil Dad this weekend, there’s a plethora of Father’s Day activities on offer throughout the city. Plant 4 Bowden is hosting a three-course luncheon at its balcony bar from 12pm until 3pm for $70 per person, as well as a Father’s Day Market.
Mill Street bar 55ml is hosting an “open mic exclusively for Dads” from 10am until late on Sunday. It will include brunch courtesy of a pop-up from Goodwood cafe Trouble and Strife.
Iberia and Vinteloper are teaming up for a Father’s Day long lunch featuring five Spanish-inspired courses, hosted at the Rundle Street restaurant. Tickets are $99 per person. An after-party will be held upstairs from 3pm, and each bottle of Vinteloper sold will be complemented with a free cheese plate.
The Stirling Hotel is launching its September Tasting Series by inviting Applewood Distillery to share its wares. There will be tastings of Applewood’s signature gin, as well as a few of its limited-release lines, plus an opportunity to chat to the makers about their process. Stirling Hotel head chef Brendan Boothroyd has invited two breweries in for the pub’s next Chef’s Table event, with Mismatch Brewing and Big Shed Brewing Concern stepping in to share the culinary stage. The evening will consist of three courses, each paired with a brew from either Mismatch or Big Shed, presented with the combined knowledge of Boothroyd and the brewers. Tickets are $70 per person plus booking fee and can be purchased here.
Arancini balls – one of the dishes the Oxford Hotel will be serving at the Pub Grub Festival.
Taking place in Victoria Square, this new event will see a collection of city pubs showcasing their menus alongside SA wine and craft beer. Pub Grub Festival creator Josh O’Shaughnessy says patrons can expect a focus on “modern pub cuisine”, including burgers, barbecue wings and Asian-style street food. There will also be live music and family entertainment, plus a big screen showing the footy. The event runs from 11am-midnight on Saturday, September 9. Tickets here.
After a brief hiatus last year due to courtyard renovations, Coriole will once again host poetry lovers and pizza aficionados at its Poets and Pizza event. All Fired Up will provide the pies, while poets Nigel Ford, Christina Haack, Alison Bennett and Jude Aquilina perform their pieces for word-hungry punters. Wine from Coriole will, of course, be in bountiful supply. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased here.
Solomon Street pizza shop Sunny’s is hosting a breakfast at night dinner event, bringing in Whistle and Flute chef Stewart Wesson for his breakfast expertise. The event promises “big breakfast pizzas, avo, McMuffins, McMimosas, Bloody McMarys, cappuccino martinis, pulp-free OJ & more”. Stay tuned to the event page for more details.
The next in the Rob Roy Wine Society dinners will be hosted by the folk at McLaren Vale winery Down the Rabbit Hole. Winemaker Matt Highet will take guests through the DTRH range in the newly constructed Rob Roy beer garden. Madame Hanoi is launching its spring menu, and chef Nic Watt is hosting an event to celebrate. The night will feature four courses inspired by “the tastes of Saigon” and paired with Howards Vineyard wines. Hosted at Adelaide Oval, Spring Wine Odyssey is an event promising the chance to experience more than 300 wines, spirits, ciders and beers from around the world, all without leaving the CBD. Ochre Nation is turning two, making it the perfect time to celebrate the opening of the cellar door. More details will be released closer to the date, but it will be worth the trip out to Gumeracha for goodies from Applewood Distillery and Unico Zelo Wines. Keep an eye on the event page.
Wine and produce lovers are invited to McLaren Vale for a Spring Affair across three of the region’s vineyards: Maxwell Wines, Paxton Wines and Coriole Vineyards. There will be live music at each venue to set the mood for punters partaking of the food and wine tastings on offer. Bus tours can be arranged from several venues around Adelaide. King William Road will host the Mercedes-Benz Unley Long Lunch (formerly known as Variety on King William) as part of the 2017 Adelaide Fashion Festival. Described as the “progression” of Adelaide’s decade-long CheeseFest, this new festival will showcase a wide range of Australian fermented foods – including cheese – over four days at Rundle Park. It will include an eight-course “Fermented Feast” presented by chef Jock Zonfrillo, wine showcases and masterclasses, talks, and food and drink workshops where fermenting experts will share their skills.
