Food and drink happenings in South Australia, including a breakfast-at-night collaboration between Sunny’s and Whistle and Flute, pizza and poetry at Coriole Vineyards, and a Pub Grub Festival in Victoria Square.
Solomon Street pizza shop Sunny’s is hosting a breakfast-at-night dinner event, bringing in Whistle and Flute chef Stewart Wesson for his breakfast expertise. The event promises “big breakfast pizzas, avo, McMuffins, McMimosas, Bloody McMarys, cappuccino martinis, pulp-free OJ & more”. Details on the event page.
Stirling Hotel head chef Brendan Boothroyd has invited two breweries in for this Chef’s Table event, with Mismatch Brewing and Big Shed Brewing Concern stepping in to share the culinary stage. The evening will consist of three courses, each paired with a brew from either Mismatch or Big Shed, presented with the combined knowledge of Boothroyd and the brewers. Taking place in Victoria Square, this new event will see a collection of city pubs showcasing their menus alongside SA wine and craft beer. Pub Grub Festival creator Josh O’Shaughnessy says patrons can expect a focus on “modern pub cuisine”, including burgers, barbecue wings and Asian-style street food. There will also be live music and family entertainment, plus a big screen showing the footy. The event runs from 11am-midnight on Saturday. Tickets here.
After a brief hiatus last year due to courtyard renovations, Coriole will once again host poetry lovers and pizza aficionados at its Poets and Pizza event. All Fired Up will provide the pies, while poets Nigel Ford, Christina Haack, Alison Bennett and Jude Aquilina perform their pieces for word-hungry punters. Wine from Coriole will, of course, be in bountiful supply. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased here.
The next in the Rob Roy Wine Society dinners will be hosted by the folk at McLaren Vale winery Down the Rabbit Hole. Winemaker Matt Highet will take guests through the DTRH range in the newly constructed Rob Roy beer garden. Madame Hanoi is launching its spring menu, and chef Nic Watt is hosting an event to celebrate. The night will feature four courses inspired by “the tastes of Saigon” and paired with Howards Vineyard wines. Hosted at Adelaide Oval, Spring Wine Odyssey is an event promising the chance to experience more than 300 wines, spirits, ciders and beers from around the world, all without leaving the CBD. Set among the barrels at Coriole Vineyards, the Chef-Off will see Coriole chef Tom Reid join with Tom Tilbury, the culinary mind behind Robe’s Gather Food and Wine, to present eight courses “using wild, local, seasonal and foraged ingredients”, paired with Coriole wines, including some museum stock. Ochre Nation is turning two, making it the perfect time to celebrate the opening of the cellar door. More details will be released closer to the date, but it will be worth the trip out to Gumeracha for goodies from Applewood Distillery and Unico Zelo Wines. Keep an eye on the event page.
Wine and produce lovers are invited to McLaren Vale for a Spring Affair across three of the region’s vineyards: Maxwell Wines, Paxton Wines and Coriole Vineyards. There will be live music at each venue to set the mood for punters partaking of the food and wine tastings on offer. Bus tours can be arranged from several venues around Adelaide. King William Road will host the Mercedes-Benz Unley Long Lunch (formerly known as Variety on King William) as part of the 2017 Adelaide Fashion Festival. Guests will enjoy a gourmet grazing platter, followed by a two-course meal provided by King William Road’s leading restaurants, while dining along a 200m stretch of the paved road. Described as the “progression” of Adelaide’s decade-long CheeseFest, this new festival will showcase a wide range of Australian fermented foods – including cheese – over four days at Rundle Park. It will include an eight-course “Fermented Feast” presented by chef Jock Zonfrillo, wine showcases and masterclasses, talks, and food and drink workshops where fermenting experts will share their skills.
