Food and drink happenings in SA, including an ’80s-themed Fork on the Road food truck gathering at the Port, Fino Fridays at Seppeltsfield, a lunch celebrating the new season’s olive oil, and smoky barbecued goodness at Sneaky Pickle.
The final Fork on the Road food truck gathering of the season will be a celebration of the ’80s at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide. Along with a collection of food trucks including Sookii La La, CaroClub, Taste of Spain, Clucking Delicious and Saint Espresso – plus craft beer, spirits and SA wine – there will also be local crafts, kids’ entertainment and DJs playing ’80s classics. The Champagne and Cognac ambassador for Pernod Ricard, Romaric Behaghel, will host this champagne dinner at the National Wine Centre. The dinner will feature five courses paired with Perrier-Jouet and Mumm vintages. Tickets are available here.
West End venue Pink Moon Saloon is warming up winter with a series of eight mid-week long-table dinners throughout June and July. Each 16-seat Harvest Moon dinner will see chefs Matthew Standen and Angus Love cook a themed menu that matches with the work of different guest winemakers. The first event, on June 6, is titled Ferment, Funk and Funghi (flavours of northern Italy), with further dinners scheduled for June 13, 20 and 27, and July 4, 11 and 18. Fino restaurant at Seppeltsfield in the Barossa is bringing back its Friday set-menu dinners this winter, with a series of “one-pot-wonders” and free corkage (one bottle per two dinners). June’s one-pot-wonder will be “Cassoulet the Barossa Way” (pictured above), followed by “Shiraz Pie July” (in, you guessed it, July) and Pasta al Forno di FINO in August. McLaren Vale cellar doors will present a range of events over the June long-weekend Sea & Vines festival, from intimate degustation dinners and long lunches, to live music, tasting experiences and family fun days. Highlights include The French Quarter at Hardy’s Tintara, with food from the Sneaky Pickle and New Orleans jazz from Atlantic Street Band, and a “Familial Feast” at d’Arrys Verandah. Described as a pop-up migrant restaurant and cooking workshop project, The Travelling Table project will take over the Unley Town Hall for four days from June 7 to 10. It will focus on the three post-war migrant communities of Greece, Ukraine and Italy, with dinners and cooking workshops representing each country’s food. The four-course dinners will be curated, cooked and shared by guest migrant grandmas, with chef John Stamatakis helping them scale up the home-style dishes for a 130-seat restaurant. To celebrate the new season’s extra-virgin olive oil, Primo Estate in McLaren Vale is hosting two lunches pairing “olive-oil-rich Italian cuisine” – such as pecorino herb-crumbed Port Lincoln sardines, and wood-roasted Hay Valley lamb loin – with a selection of its wines. Guests will be blindfolded for this four-course degustation dinner at the National Wine Centre hosted by Can:Do 4Kids, Townsend House. The event – which will raise money to support South Australian children who are blind, deaf, hearing and vision-impaired – will see each table hosted by a local winemaker, with the menu combining textures and flavours that seek to “ignite the senses”. To whet appetites for the upcoming Beer and BBQ Festival (details below), Up in Smoke BBQ Competition is throwing a barbecue lunch at Sneaky Pickle on Goodwood Road. The Ark Beer and Cider Fest at the Arkaba Hotel will feature more than 80 beer and cider tastings, street food and a masterclass. Local and international craft beers and ciders will feature at the event, which is now in its 12th year. Ticket price ($25 pre-sale or $35 at the door) includes a tasting glass and all tastings.
A classic Beef Wellington main will be paired with St Henri (2014) Shiraz and RWT (2015) Shiraz.
The Mayfair Hotel has joined with Penfolds for a dinner in its Mayflower Restaurant where executive chef Bethany Finn will present a six-course menu designed to complement seven premium Penfolds wines, including the 2013 Grange, Bin A Chardonnay, St Henri Shiraz and RWT Shiraz. SA Wagyu beef producer Mayura Station has teamed up with 2KW for this “meat for the senses” dinner, which will celebrate beef, Japanese whisky, red wine and dark beer. Think dishes like Wagyu pancetta and Wagyu rump cecina matched with a black IPA, and Yuzu sorbet with a Yamazaki apricot old-fashioned. Tickets are $130pp, with the full menu available here.
This year’s festival at the historic Brick Dairy Pavillion at Adelaide Showgrounds will deliver three days of beer, barbecue and beats, including discussions with brewers, master-classes and the Up in Smoke BBQ competition. More than 60 brewers and cider-makers will be represented at the festival, and BBQ ambassador Duncan Welgemoed of Africola has curated a line-up of barbecuers including Canadian TV chef Matty Matheson, the boys from Adelaide’s Low ‘N’ Slow American BBQ and Victorian vegan chef Shannon Martinez. This Harry Potter-themed high tea at Stamford Plaza Adelaide includes a “butter beer cocktail” on arrival and sweet and savoury treats such as Haigh’s chocolate frog slice, Muggle quiche Lorraine and Ginny’s Pygmy Curry puffs. A “master wizard” and balloon artist will attend the high tea to help guests make their own wands. Tickets are $52 for adults and $27 for children aged five to 12.
