Solstice Media, publisher of InDaily, has announced a cadetship program for aspiring South Australian journalists.
Initially, Solstice Media will be employing two journalism cadets for a one-year program to work on its publications InDaily, The Lead, SALIFE and CityMag.
In a rare opportunity for aspiring local reporters, the cadets will be trained and mentored by the experienced team of editors at Solstice Media, producing content for both digital and print publications.
There will be a focus on digital journalism – the new normal for the next generation of journalists.
The funding for the program has been made available in part by the Federal Government’s Regional and Small Publishers Cadetships Program and Solstice Media’s loyal donors – who support and value local journalism and different media voices in South Australia.
Solstice Media managing director Paul Hamra said the program was an exciting and important development for the company and for the South Australian media industry.
“We have seen a trend by media companies to cut journalist jobs in recent years, particularly in South Australia, so this is a good news story for emerging journalists and local media,” he said.
“Without initiatives like this, opportunities for young people wanting to get into journalism will wither, which is not only bad news for local media, but the community it covers,” he said.
