Upcoming food and drink happenings in SA, including this weekend’s Seafood + Sounds – featuring the Chilli Crab Shack – at Adelaide Central Market, vegan bites paired with craft gin, a fine wine dinner at 2KW, and a chance to taste Kobe beef.
Adelaide Central Market will serve up a smorgasbord of seafood dishes, local wine and gin, cooking demonstrations and live music over the two-day Seafood + Sounds. The event sees the return of Sprout Cooking School’s popular Chilli Crab Shack at the Producer in Residence stall, with customers encouraged to don a bib, grab some crackers and tuck into Spencer Gulf blue swimmer crab cooked in a chilli tamarind sauce and served with egg noodles and Thai herbs (bookings recommended). Samtass Bros Seafood’s Shuck Shack will have seafood chowder, salt and pepper squid, fish and chips, and steamed mussels, with other seafood dishes being offered including mussels with French fries from Les Deux Coqs, Peruvian ceviche from Cumbia, and spaghetti vongole with napolitana sauce from Lucia’s. There will also be a Green Ant Gin cocktail bar and wine tasting (in the Gouger dining area) and “roving oyster shucking”.
Taking place in the Ian McLachlan Room at Adelaide Oval, this tasting event will feature more than 300 new-release wines from producers around the world – from South Australian wineries such as Wirra Wirra, Langmeil, Jim Barry and Deviation Road, to France’s Domaine William Fèvre and Italy’s Antinori. The biennial event is presented by wine merchants Samuel Smith & Son and Negociants Australia, with tickets (here) costing $40, including all tastings and a Riedel Ouverture Magnum wine glass.
2KW Bar and Restaurant executive chef Trent Lymn is creating a four-course dinner – including South Australian snapper ceviche and Gumpark organic pork loin chop – matched with to eight 2019-release wines from Clare Valley’s Grosset Wines. Jeffrey Grosset, winery founder and winemaker, will run guests through each of the wines, which will include the Polish Hill Riesling, Springvale Riesling, Alea Riesling and Apiana Fiano. Belgian Beer Café Oostende in the East End is hosting a Beer Olympics, with seven breweries – including SA-based Big Shed, Barossa Valley Brewing and Pirate Life – each running pop-up bars showcasing three of their brews. Entry for the 6-9pm event is $10, with the brewery that scores the most votes from patrons winning a tap for the month.
Serafino Wines executive chef Daniel Armon and Australian Good Food Guide executive chef Shawn Sheather are presenting a six-course degustation dinner at the McLaren Vale winery. Each dish will feature a “hint” of Serafino wine, with the menu including beetroot-cured Hiramasa Kingfish with Sharktooth Chardonnay, apple, fennel, pea and burnt citrus; Nomad Farm chicken galantine with zucchini flower, Premium Sparkling sabayon and scampi roe; and beetroot ice cream with black sesame, pink peppercorn meringue, white chocolate and Goose Island Moscato foam. The dinner will include wine pairings selected by chief winemaker Charles Whish, with tickets (here) costing $151.91 and city bus transfers available.
Coriole Vineyards in McLaren Vale will celebrate its 50th birthday with a day of wine, food, music, art and dancing. The day will begin with Prosecco and canapés, followed by a five-course lunch and wines showcasing the last four decades – including the new-release Piquepoul, aged Chenin Blanc, several vintages of Sangiovese and the Lloyd Reserve Shiraz. Tickets are $175, with transport available from the city to McLaren Vale.
This stand-up Sunday party at Press∗ food & wine is dedicated to the Waymouth Street restaurant’s signature dish. For $55 (food only), guests will enjoy a roving feast of canapés and Berkshire suckling pig with all the trimmings. The lunchtime event will also feature gin-based cocktails by Imperial Measures Distilling and wines from SC Pannell.
Plant 4 at Bowden will host its next all-vegan event from 5pm-10pm on the last Saturday of September. Plant Based at Plant 4 will feature plant-based eateries, craft beer, SA wine, cocktails featuring local spirits, handmade shopping stalls and a DJ.
More than 2600 local and national new-release vintages and award-winning wines will be available for tasting at this showcase of wines entered into the Royal Adelaide Wine Show competition. To be held at the Adelaide Showgrounds’ Wayville Pavilion from 6-8.30pm on the Friday of the October long weekend, Taste of the Best will feature wines from 376 exhibitors, including independent winemakers. Tickets ($70) include a tasting glass to take home and cocktail food; there’s also the opportunity to join a “Riedel Sensory Workshop” or a masterclass facilitated by the National Wine Education and Training Centre.
Lot 100 at Nairne is planning to celebrate the October long weekend by transforming its brewery shed into a “giant Octoberfest-like beer hall” on the Saturday and Sunday, with long bench tables, Mismatch beers and Adelaide Hills Cider by the stein glass, German-style food from a firepit and live music. Tickets (here) are $35. On the Saturday, Lot 100 has teamed up with Electra House to offer an extended event ($95) which will begin with breakfast in the city, followed by a bus trip to join the celebrations in the Hills.
Samurai Teppanyaki House in Hyde Park will be serving the highly prized Kobe beef as part of a 10-course degustation dinner. Owner and head chef Clark Zhang says diners will be served two cuts of Kobe beef – rib eye and fillet (tenderloin) – as well as SA Mayura Station wagyu and A5 Japanese wagyu. The menu also includes Coffin Bay oysters, Spencer Gulf king prawns, eastern rock lobster, Moreton Bay bugs and Jade Tiger abalone. The dinner (full menu and details here) is $360pp, plus $210 for the option Yalumba wine package.
A prelude to the Vegan Festival (October 26-27), Vegustation is described as “a compassion-based fine-dining experience paired with locally distilled gin”. Hosted by chef Zacchary Bird, it will feature a six-course tasting menu by vegan caterer Francesco’s Cicchetti served in Prohibition Gin’s Gilbert Street warehouse. The $100 cost also includes a glass of gin.
This two-day showcase of all things cheesy and fermented in Rymill Park will feature more than 100 food and drink stalls, masterclasses and cooking demonstrations (including by MasterChef judge Matt Preston), bars, and new Italian, Spanish and French quarters celebrating international cheese, wine and produce. There will also be a four-hour “Great Wine and Cheese Voyage” featuring tastings at CheeseFest & FERMENT as well as East End venues such Mothervine, EastEnd Cellars and The Stag Balcony. Pitched as a day of pure indulgence, the National Wine Centre’s Champagne Fest will feature more than 40 different Champagnes, plus sparkling wines from Australia, America and Europe. There will also be fresh seafood and other “festival food” stations, and live entertainment. The event will run from 11am until 5pm, with entry tickets costing $25 in advance or $30 on the day (wine tastings from $2 each).
Described by promoters as “the most glamorous outdoor picnic of the year”, Le Dîner en Blanc will return to Adelaide after a year’s break, with new management at the helm. Based on a worldwide concept inspired by the iconic event of the same name in Paris, it will see diners dressed in white descend on a “secret” location laid out with tables and chairs, fine china and silverware for an evening of gourmet food, drinks, live music and dancing. Participation isn’t quite as simple as just buying a ticket, and the price hasn’t been released, but you can register to join the wait list here.
