Police say they responded to reports of an alleged assault after 7.30am Friday at a Hamley Bridge home, 76km north of Adelaide.

Officers then received reports that the suspect had left in a silver Mitsubishi Lancer and then allegedly drove off from a Balaklava petrol station without paying at 8.30am.

Patrols later saw the car on the Augusta Highway near Snowtown but lost sight of it and called in the police helicopter.

The car was seen again just before 10am travelling north on the Horrocks Highway north of Gulnare, with the police helicopter and patrols tracking the suspect though the townships of Booleroo Centre, Wilmington and Carrieton.

The suspect was then stopped on a track near Barata Road at Belton just before 1pm and the driver was arrested.

The 40-year-old Hamley Bridge man was charged with assault, illegal use of a motor vehicle, making off without payment, dangerous driving to escape police and drive while disqualified.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.
