John Giatras, one half of John and George’s Hair Salon for Men, died suddenly this week, aged 57.

John, who ran the iconic barbershop on Prospect Road with his 92-year-old father George for 36 years, has been remembered in tributes as “a great man and friend” and “an icon of Prospect Road”.

John and George’s Hair Salon for Men is now closed indefinitely, according to a sign on the barbershop’s door.

Floral tributes have been placed at the door, including from Labor MP for Adelaide Lucy Hood.

In a statement, Hood said there were “no words for the loss of such a great man”.

“John had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, valued and part of our community,” Hood said.

“From the chats in the chair or waiting on the couch, to the lollipops for little ones, from first haircuts to his beloved regulars, John was there with us through life’s big milestones and the everyday moments.

“Prospect has truly lost a local legend.”

Prospect Mayor Matt Larwood told InDaily that John gave him his first haircut back in 1985.

“He had a tradition,” Larwood said.

“If you were getting married, you could go in on the day before you were getting married and he would give you a free haircut.

“It was the place you went for young kids all the way through to people the same age as his father to get their hair cut, and the price was always reasonable. He probably could’ve charged more but he didn’t.

“I grew up knowing him, my whole adult life, from leaving school to getting married and having kids to losing jobs, getting new jobs, not being on council, being on council.

John’s father recently celebrated his 92nd birthday and created a video to celebrate the occasion.
