Family First MP Sarah Game’s contentious bill to restrict access to late-term abortions was defeated in the lower house of  South Australian parliament today, after hours of debate in both houses.

Both Premier Peter Malinauskas and Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn voted in favour of the bill.

It was a nail-biter in the upper house, with the bill passing by just one vote. The bill was easily defeated in the lower house, with just nine votes in favour of the controversial piece of legislation.

Speaker of the House, Nat Cook does not get a vote. Cook shared the news that “tonight the South Australian Parliament voted for unchanged access to Abortion” with three orange love hearts to her social media. Cook was previously involved in the campaign to decriminalise abortion in 2021.

Labor’s Alex Dighton did not vote, as he was on paternity leave.
